Sun Supermarket – A new study by the European Commission (EC) concludes that efforts to achieve the European Union’s (EU) target of generating 20% of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2020 will generate 2.8 million jobs overall in the renewables industry. The study also concluded that the renewable energy sector will generate a total value added of around 1.1% of gross domestic product (GDP) in the EU nations. In 2005, the renewable energy sector in the EU employed 1.4 million people with a gross value added of €58 billion (about $81 billion U.S. using June 10 exchange rates), said the report, which noted that biomass, wind, and hydroelectric technologies are currently generating the most substantial employment opportunities in the EU. via Climate Change Business>>
